Retired Commercial Fishing Gear ART...
Retired Commercial Fishing Gear ART...
...upon my parents moving to Bellingham, WA in 1970, my dad learned how to commercial fish in the Puget Sound for salmon, which he then followed exploration in fisheries up and down the coast from San Francisco to Dillingham, Alaska. Growing up, my brother and I fished summers with my dad, which my brother continues to this day. My dad passed on in 2021, since then I have found a way to feel close to him, the fishing community, art, hard work, and my family...RHUMshaker.
Each float is unique in shape from being smashed up against a drum, pressurized in the ocean, cooking in the sun, etc...all are weathered, salt-soaked, and has caught lots of sustainable wild salmon or herring. Some of this gear is from our personal collection; decades ago my dad rescued cedar floats from being destroyed in Bristol Bay, he brought them home to WA on his fishing boat. Others, we used herring fishing, or salmon fishing...the rest, were gleaned from fellow fisherman. I sought out each piece for its unique beauty. Each piece has a story, each is rescued from becoming landfill.
Each float is cleaned with vinegar, beeswax, and/or orange oil.
Influenced by these unconventional fishing materials, and my vision of various nautical ambiances, like Tiki Bars, coastal homes, and beach bars....brought me to explore the marriage of color, texture, patina, shape, and character of these tough beauties, able to weather any storm. I love color, and natural--lack thereof,.
Everyones space has a place for one of my RHUMshaker buoy art sculptures.
Let me know if you would like a particular look, dimensions, specifics... create it for your own for your space, and I will get you what you’re after. I have a variety of vintage net, rope, corks and floats.
